David was a past President of the Northern Suburbs Cycling Club (now Northern Sydney CC) and instrumental in making NSCC the largest racing club in NSW in the 1980’s. David was a cornerstone member of BiciSport from day one and was highly respected by all those who knew him and in his latter years he contributed to the sport in Orange (NSW) as a State level racing Commissaire. RIP David. Mike O’Reilly

BiciSport In Belgium @ Berg Ten Haute cobbled climb @ 7 Apr - Filip Meirhaeghe (right) took the Silver medal at the Sydney Olympics in the Mountain Bike and had a notable Belgian professional career (rode Paris Roubaix three times & the Ronde twice).
Filip was instrumental in getting the cobbles replaced with new (old) cobbles on the Berg Ten Haute climb and this cobbled climb is now used in the Ronde (and many other regional races). Pictured above is Paul Vermeiren left (three times Belgian Olympian in Archery, Thomas, MOR & Filip Meirhaeghe.
**The viewing seat is dedicated to Allan Peiper (Australian professional cyclist who now lives in Belgium) at the base of the Berg Ten Haute climb.**

Bredene Koksijde Classic @ 21 Mar - The Bredene race climbs the Kemmelberg climb from both sides - the flatter “Belvedere” side is first and then the much steeper “Ossaire” side. Both sides have heavy cobbles. The pro peloton passes over Belvedere with MOR in the gutter. Weather conditions were ideal @ 16 degrees.
**The Kemmelberg was a major battle location in World War One with a French Monument to the fallen soldiers at the summit.**

**BiciSport in Belgium 2025 - the famous Eikenberg climb near Oudenaarde**
Belgium has a long history of digging up country lanes and putting down new (old) cobbles for a bike race to then bounce over - be it the Koppenberg (rebuilt at least twice) , Patersberg, Berg Ten Houte and now the Eikenberg near Oudenaarde in 2025.

BiciSport in Belgium # 1

Welcome to the first edition of BiciSport in Belgium 2025.

Accommodation is at the Kokerelle B&B ‘service corse’ in the tiny Flemish village of Maarke Kerkem which is situated just 5k from Oudenaarde and adjacent to the Eikenberg cobbled climb used regularly in the Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) professional cycling classic.

The first week in Belgium starts with the Jean Pierre Monsere Tribute in Retie just north of Antwerp

**Mars Gazelle Continental Team (Netherlands) - 1966-71**
Mars was confectionary and Gazelle were the Dutch bikes. A mid range Dutch “amateur” team that in many ways reflected the highly professional nature of Dutch cycling in the 1970’s. Amateurs (maybe not) and they won numerous races across varied terrain.

Pont Gibus is a disused railway bridge in northern France that has entered into cycling folklore and always features in the Paris Roubaix classic. Peter Figg (BiciSport) took the above picture just outside Beechworth in northern Victoria in his own tribute to an Aussie style Pont Gibus (maybe a Pont Figgus perhaps)
